At first, let me introduce myself. My name is Katherine. I’m sixteen years old and I’m a high school student. Each year we have school holidays and the longest one falls on summer. However, I like the New Year holidays most of all. They usually last for two weeks but we get to have lots of fun during this period of time.

First of all, we celebrate the New Year and Christmas. These days are long awaited by many people in the world. Nearly for everyone the 1st of January is the start of new life. That’s why this holiday is celebrated so cheerfully. After the New Year day we visit all our relatives and friends to exchange presents. To those, who live in other countries, we write postcards or letters with greetings. On the 6th of January we celebrate Orthodox Christmas in Russia. My grandmother usually cooks sweet rice with dried fruits. It’s our traditional meal for Christmas.

As it gets rather snowy outside we go sledding with friends. If there is time we also go to the nearest ice-rink to skate. Our teachers usually set some home work for holidays, so I try to find time for it as well. Most of all I like quiet evenings near the fireplace, when it snows outside and I can sit with an interesting book on a sofa and drink hot tea. Unfortunately, time flies quickly during the holidays so approximately on the 10th of January I have to go back to my daily routine again.

In Russia we also celebrate the old style New Year, which falls on the 13th of January. This day is not as important as the 1st of January, but we still prepare festive meal and treats.

Наши преподаватели, как правило, задают нам домашнюю работу на праздники, так что я стараюсь найти и для этого время. Holidays are very pleasant days, because these are days when people don’t have to work, but have an opportunity to relax, meet friends, give presents and say many pleasant words to people whom they love. New Year is one of these holidays. The New Year’s festivities begin on December 31 and continue into the early hours of January 1.

New Year is a great holiday. Everybody likes it very much. Especially this holiday is loved by children. New Year is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home with members of the family and friends. People decorate their houses, send greeting cards and buy gifts for kids, relatives and friends. A New Year’s tree is a symbol of celebration . It is usually covered with coloured balls and strings of coloured lights .

New Year’s Eve is a time for fun. People spend the holiday at home or in restaurants. The most popular New Year’s Eve drink is champagne. Champagne is the drink that symbolizes celebration and it is often served for the midnight toast. At 12 o’clock everybody raises a glass of champagne and says “Happy New Year!” New Year’s Eve festivals often continue until two or three o’clock in the morning.

New Year’s Day is a special day. Many people make New Year resolutions , give up bad habits or plan for future. From the ancient times to the present New Year’s customs have been connected with saying good-bye to the past and looking forward to a better future.

New Year Holiday

There are a lot of holidays during the year. Some of them are national, some of them are private or religious but one holiday is celebrated all over the world. It is New Year. This holiday can be called international as each person on our planet enjoys celebrating it.

New Year is a magical time when all the miracles seem to come true. People have a great opportunity to look at their deeds and events during the previous year in order to decide what to do further. All of us are full of hope and joy. We are eager to believe that the New Year is able to be much better. We hope that it brings only the Good and this thought makes us happy.

Before New Year people usually draw the line of theirs aims and plans. They try to finish all incomplete duties and solve all the problems in order to leave all negative things in the past. People decorate theirs houses with bright and sparkling New Years tree. Children write long letter to Santa Claus with all their wishes. Mothers and wives cook special tasty New Years dinner. It is the great moment to spend all the time with people you love.

Each nation has its own rituals concerning New Year celebration like for example, Italians who throw away all the unnecessary things. But in spite of all national differences each of us hopes for better life and optimistic future. We are all the same whispering our devout desires as the clock strikes 12 times.

My New Year

New Year I celebrate on the first of January. Every time I prepare for New Year. It`s pretty awful. I decorate New Year`s spruce with beautiful toys. Toys were makes our hands are especially beautiful.

My younger for other cut many paper snowflakes and we hand them in our flat together. I make or buy different presents for my friends and family and relatives. I`m fond of to be given presents.

Especially, I enjoy many sweets. Also I like to make holiday dishes. I can`t cook very well, but I always help my mum to cook a holiday dishes, that`s why I know how to cook certain thing`s. I can make "Herring under fur" and another salad called "The cheese paradise" and some other salads, for example. For this holiday we usually do several salads and sometimes we have a roasted chicken, too. Once more, I when my mother does my favourite cake "Miracle".

At 11:30 we seat at the table and talk. At the midnight we listen to the rings of the clock and to the congratulatory speech of the president. Then we drink the champagne and eat delicious dishes. Further we exchange presents which we make for each other. On the eve of morning we go to bed. New Year is the most magic holiday that`s why I like it.

What is New Year"s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year"s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called " Tet Nguyen Dan"?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. To recognize its importance, Vietnamese ancestors invented many rituals, rules and regulations in its honor.

At midnight after president’s appearance on television chiming clock begins to strike. We wish each other a happy New Year and make a wish and then exchange gifts. When I was a child I found the gifts under the Christmas tree and I thought that Santa Claus had brought them. Although I’m already adult and I don’t believe that Santa Claus exists, on New Year’s Eve I want to find myself in the dream and to believe in a miracle.
